Telenor President Jon Fredrik Baksaas yesterday urged the telecom regulator in Bangladesh to expedite the process of introducing 3G network, as at least half the local telecom market is now ready for the third generation technology.

Speaking at a press meet in the capital, he said, “The introduction of 3G is something we are quite well prepared for both in terms of manpower and investment.

“It is up to the government to accelerate the 3G licensing process so that we can move forward with the new services in the near future.”

Telenor is the majority shareholder in Grameenphone, the country’s largest mobile operator.

Baksaas, also chief executive officer of the Norway-based company, stressed the need for an investment-friendly regulatory framework.

He also said it is important that the telecom operators participate in the upcoming licence renewal process.

“Back during the 1990s, the government here issued the licences with a very negligible rate of fees, and the telecom industry in the following years experienced a boom in its penetration and coverage”, he continued.

“Keeping that in mind, the regulator should come to negotiate with the operators regarding the licence renewal and in offering the 3G spectrum solutions.

“Looking into Bangladesh, this country has a huge investment potential but the platform for investment also needs to be understood,” Baksaas said.

“Given the huge investment that has already been done, licence renewal is something the international investors are looking forward to and it must also be made to ensure rapid 3G roll-out.”

The Telenor chief, however, sees no possibility of the latest 4G technology being introduced here anytime soon.

“Our customers will benefit from improved access to high speed wireless voice and data services, a broad base of handset technology and smart phones, and increased capabilities for high speed mobile data,” said Don Campbell, President and CEO, Tbaytel. “Tbaytel’s investment in our 3G HSPA network will deliver increased value to our stakeholders in Thunder Bay and the region – for our customers, our employees and communities in Northern Ontario.”
The next phase of expansion of the new 3G HSPA network is targeted in communities west of Thunder Bay in Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Red Lake and Kenora in December 2010.
In January 2011, 3G HSPA services are scheduled for deployment in communities of Atikokan, Fort Frances, Rainy River and Nipigon. Full deployment of the new 3G HSPA technology will be completed by the third quarter of 2011.
This new network will connect customers in communities and along major highway corridors covering an area of 300,000 square kilometers in Northern Ontario. In addition customers will have access to a high speed network that provides an integral link to the east and west in Canada and to world-wide roaming. Bharti Airtel’s Kenyan Unit Plans 3G Rollout in First Quarter:

Kenyan mobile- phone unit will begin rolling out 3G services in the first quarter of 2011 as part of a push for more customers and a return to profit at its unprofitable African operations.

New products will include e-mail and e-commerce services, Rene Meza, managing director of Airtel Networks Kenya Ltd., said in an interview yesterday in Nairobi, the capital. Airtel is considering subsidizing laptops and Internet-enabled handsets to drive data use in East Africa’s biggest economy, he said.

“We have finalized planning for 3G and we expect to have the services rolled at the end of the first quarter, which will change mobile telephony in the country,” Meza said.

Mobile operators in Kenya are becoming more reliant on data for revenue after the industry regulator in August halved the rates that operators charge each other to connect voice calls across networks to 2.21 shillings. That triggered a round of cuts in call costs by companies to less than 2 shillings per minute and in some cases free calls during off-peak hours.

Airtel suffered losses as a result of the reduction in call charges, though the company is keen for those tariffs to remain low as it seeks to grow market share, Meza said.

Airtel Kenya, rebranded from Zain Kenya after Bharti’s $9 billion acquisition of most of Zain’s African assets in June, competes with Safaricom Ltd., Kenya’s biggest mobile-phone company, and Telkom Kenya Ltd., a unit of France Telecom SA.

Data Revenue

Safaricom is currently the only operator of a third- generation telecommunications network in Kenya. Bharti has a license to operate a 3G network, while Telkom Kenya will receive a similar permit tomorrow, the Communications Commission of Kenya said today.

Operators are betting that increased data traffic will make up for the lower voice revenue and are offering customers laptops, net books or smart phones to attract new clients.

By 2015, there will be 265 million mobile broadband subscriptions in Africa, up from about 12 million at the end of September, according to Informa Telecoms & Media, a London-based research group.

Airtel Africa plans to double its subscriber base to 100 million in two years time as it looks to return to profitability, said Chief Executive Officer Jayant Khosla. Losses at Bharti’s African units, including investment-holding companies for its mobile operations on the continent, totaled 3.79 billion rupees ($83 million) in the three months through September, according to accounts published on its website.

“Our immediate goal is to grow the customer base which we intend to achieve by retaining the low tariff charges, focusing on potential customers at the bottom of the pyramid and providing more additional services to the existing services,” Khosla said at a presentation yesterday in Nairobi.

Bharti has operations in 16 African countries with about 459 million people and a mobile customer base of 185 million people, according to Bharti’s website. Airtel had 40 million customers in those markets at the end of the second quarter, it said.

Verizon customers in Culpeper will soon receive expanded wireless voice and 3G data coverage thanks to a new cell site recently installed in Rapidan.

The increased coverage is part of the company’s annual multibillion-dollar network investment to stay ahead of the growing demand for its voice and data services.

Last year, Verizon Wireless spent $274 million on regional network improvements, bringing total network investment in the region since 2000 to more than $2.3 billion, according to a news release.

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has also announced it will install its 4G LTE Network in 38 major metropolitan areas, covering more than 110 million Americans, by the end of the year

Intex launches new projector handset; 3G handsets by March:

Information technology devices maker Intex Technologies today launched a mobile handset with an in-bulit projector to combine projection with mobility at a price of 16,000.

“The handset will be available in the range of 15,000 to 16,000 in the market,” Intex Technologies Executive Vice-Chairman Ramesh A Vaswani said.

Besides, the company plans to launch 3G-enabled handsets in the next quarter of current fiscal (January-March) and is also looking to make their entry into the smartphones category during the same period.

You’re hopefully already familiar with StumbleUpon, the discovery engine that finds the best of the web, recommended just for you. But we’re not ones to rest on our laurels: StumbleUpon is a growing discovery and social recommendation technology company with the audacious long-term goal of helping people quickly and easily discover and share information individualized to their unique tastes and preferences.

We burst onto the scene during Web 1.0, but after a short stint as part of eBay, we’re independent again and back with the same change-the-world ambitions that launched us from the very beginning. We’re led by an experienced, passionate management team with deep domain expertise in social media and recommendation technology and backed by an investor lineup including Ram Shriram, Accel Partners and August Capital (who’ve grown companies like Google and Facebook). Ours is a dynamic team boasting varied backgrounds and interests (including a professional musician, rock-climbers, photographers and mathematicians) and brimming with veterans of some of technology’s most successful companies including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Yahoo, working together to grow StumbleUpon and solidify our vital role in the web ecosystem.
